Poor Guy!

I feel for him having to walk around in this get-up, although it’s for a good cause.

From the website explaining what he’s doing: “The Bag Monster® is a costume worn by your volunteer to visually show the impact single-use plastic bags have on our environment. These flighty bags end up in trees, along roadsides and washed up on sea shores. Each costume is decked out with 500 plastic bags, the average amount an American uses in one year.”

When I walked by he was filling the parking meter. I feel guilty because I always take bags at the supermarket — I use them to dispose of kitty litter. I don’t know what else to use.

Staycation Almost Over

I’m on hold with Unemployment. Ugh. Ugh to the infinity power. Okay, it was a few minutes wait, not too bad. I have to re-file October 4th. I never should have filed now in the first place. Why didn’t they tell me that at the time?? They’re not allowed, was the answer.

Actually, I get that. They’re not allowed to tell people not to bother, because what if you get someone who is … not good at their job?

Tomorrow is the last day of my staycation. I didn’t really pull it off. Maybe on two days I did. The day I went to the met, and yesterday when I read all day long mostly. Today I’m going to the dentist. What was I thinking??? Except, I do love that feel of taking care of things that need to be attended to, like teeth cleaning.

No, I’m an idiot.

A doorman in front of the Trump building on 5th Avenue. Cute kid. I wonder if he really wants to be an actor.

There’s A Tooth in There! Really!

The other day when I went to the Met I forced myself to meander, looking at things I don’t normally look at. It was fantastic, although I did have a moment where I wished I was rich so I could own things like the objects I was looking at in the various decorative arts sections.

But this was one of the usual things I look at. This is a reliquary and it’s said to contain … Mary Magdalen’s tooth. I think it was Mary Magdalen.

Now I’m worried I’m remembering wrong.

Some Shots from my 9/11Day

This is my favorite shot from my 9/11 lunch. I got the full group shot but I prefer this one, which I took while people were lining up.

Here’s the full group.

Horses! There were lots of them. These guys were heading off to follow a march down Broadway.

I was actually zeroing in on the dog. I just happened to get this guy with his lovely message for us. Sigh.

Sigh again.

So yeah, 9/11

Every year I organize a lunch for the 9/11 volunteers (with my official cousin Barbara Horn who now does all the work) so I’ll be heading downtown in a while.

Speaking of 9/11, I read a bunch of books afterwards, and then I got burnt out on 9/11 and stopped reading. But I just started The Looming Tower and MAN. This guy can write. I’m getting such an education about the history that led up to 9/11.

There was a candlelight vigil in support of the Cordoba Community Center last night. I smiled the whole time walking by. With all respect to those who feel differently about this issue, this event was so different than the protest against. The protest against was all hate speech and how the Constitution was never meant to include Muslims, and so on. This was friendly and warm, very neighborhood-y, and the crowd was diverse. It was also a lot bigger which made me happy.

What a night I passed through yesterday. Census workers, candlelight vigil for religious tolerance and Fashion’s Night Out. And that was just one, teeny, tiny path through Manhattan. All over the city there were millions of other parties and meetings and events.
