Parlor Entertainment
While I was up at the Morris-Jumel Mansion I met this fabulous couple who own a building diagonally across the street from the mansion. He, Kurt Thometz, runs a bookstore in their building, Jumel Terrace Books, and she, Camilla Huey, is a costume designer who is also researching Eliza Jumel (best not-yet-really-told story out there). Among the many things they turned me onto that after was Parlor Entertainment.
Every Sunday afternoon at 4pm, 555 Edgecombe Avenue, Apt. 3F, you can hear jazz for free (donations accepted). I went and had the one of the best afternoons EVER. There’s a lot of videos of them on YouTube, most are better than my out of focus effort. But it’s mine. The music was just amazing and this is only a taste. That woman at the end of my video sang a song so hauntingly beautiful I didn’t film it because I didn’t want to be distracted for a single second.
A Moment of Glory
I got to the NPR studio early yesterday, so I relaxed for a few minutes in the park behind the main branch of the New York Public Library. It was just so ridiculously pleasant I think I smiled the whole time, thereby signaling “crazy person” to all around me. Crazy person with a camera no less. But I was happy to be going to NPR to record a commentary, it was a nice day, all was well with the world for a few minutes. I mean, will you look at that tiny field of daffodils!!
My Amazing Day in Harlem
I went uptown yesterday to make a little YouTube movie about the ghost story at the Morris-Jumel Mansion. I had so many problems, I may decide to re-do it, but man what a day I had. I’ll be posting pictures, and hopefully another small movie later today.
This is the lobby for the building where I went to hear “Parlor Entertainment.” That’s what I hope to make a movie about this afternoon. Oops! Gotta go! Radio interview!
