Damnation Island Update

I just updated the Events page with a few new events that have been scheduled for my book. I also learned that there’s going to be a review of my book in the New York Times on July 1!! Getting a review in the Times is a big deal and I am SO excited!! This is everything I’d hoped for. Except me being me, I’m terrified about getting a bad review. I’m going to be a complete and absolute wreck until it comes out. Ohgod, ohgod, ohgod. But YAY!!

I didn’t have my camera with me so I didn’t get a great shot, but I was walking behind these nuns yesterday, and it made me realize I never see nuns anymore. Researching the history of one nun for my book made me reflect on nuns I have known. Not a lot of them, and they could be terrifying, but they were also great teachers. It made me sad to think of them disappearing. Come back nuns! Church: be more supportive of them!!

  1. This photo blows me away…. 5 nuns that appear to be walking on air! (Maybe floating in to save us all from the evil one in the white house.) I love contrast in pictures and the black against the washed out background lends itself to the imagination of the viewer. I love it. It would make a terrific painting.

Huge honor to be reviewed in the NYT. Very cool!

  2. And the nun on our right? What is she carrying? I’d love it if it were hula hoops.

  3. I really think it’s a bicycle–see Sister’s right hand–but I’d rather they were hula hoops or drums. And I forgot to congratulate you on the NYT review.

  4. When people ask why I love being Catholic, “nuns” are always one of the top reasons. Particularly nuns who do things like protest the School of the Americas:

The church totally needs to be more supportive of its nuns. Also needs to have women priests. But that’s a fight for another day.

I have written “review NYT July 1” in my calendar so I make sure to go read the review of your book right away. That is SO EXCITING!

  5. As a kid, I thought nuns were interesting, based on books like The Nun’s Story, where the nun in question was a medical professional. Also, the fact that they wore a uniform was intriguing; they never had to worry about what to wear. I also thought life in an abbey was attractive, if it was a self-sustaining abbey with gardens and chickens and things. A Stoic existence.
