He’s looking at me, right??

I took this picture because I liked the ivy-covered wall, but then when I uploaded it I noticed the pigeon. Watching me.

Which reminds me–I regularly rescue spiders from my bathtub even though they terrify me and I sometimes scream while doing it because I’m afraid that the spider will crawl off the paper I’ve used to rescue it and onto me before I’ve had a chance to put them in the hall. But I fantasize that the spiders of the world know that I am a spider-rescuer and they have all agreed to leave me alone and will not do things like crawl on me.

  1. “If you want to live and thrive, let the spider run alive”. That’s what the old folks used to say.

  2. The lads don’t eat spiders? The most disgusting thing Squint does (besides the vomiting) is spider-eating. I love the jumping spiders. So does he, in his own way.

  3. I like that saying Dan! I am and catch and release person as well Stacy. Hey, it’s not their fault they find themselves in places we don’t want them to be. I have what I call a “bug cup”. It’s big with a wide rim so I scoop all of the unwelcome bugs in it, cover it real quick and send them on their way outside. I can’t help but think it does mean something somehow, however small of a gesture.

  4. That’s what I think Betsy. And Dan, I have never heard that saying. I wonder what it was referring to? What do spiders to that would help us thrive? Eat something even worse?

And Rick, I would have to leave whatever city had jumping spiders. That is simply unendurable. Except I’m still in a city which has flying cockroaches. So maybe I would learn to cope. Christ. Jumping, flying.
    Unfair!!

  5. C’mon, Stacy, you’ve gotta love these little guys:

I had one that lived in my VW in the 70’s when I was in college. He would come out at the same time every day and walk across the dash. He was like a friend and I looked forward to seeing him and spoke soothingly to him while he perched on the speedometer looking at me. He lived in my car for over a year. Life was good. One day, I took my mom to the mall and the jumping spider came out as usual. Before I could stop her, she smashed him with a rolled up store ad. “Don’t worry, I got that spider”, she said.

oh, btw, there are plenty of jumping spider species in NY.

  6. Spiders eat other bugs, including mosquitoes. I heard the saying from “old folks” back in Chautauqua County.
The original is “If you want to live and thrive, let the spider run and live,” with the archaic pronunciation of “live” with the long “I”. But it got modernized to keep people from being confused, I guess.
Spiders can give you a heck of a bite, tho, so they require respect.
