The American Dream and American Reality have Squared Off

I borrowed that line from a book I’m reading now, The Time of Our Singing by Richard Powers. He was writing about when the Daughters of the American Revolution refused to give Marian Anderson permission to sing in Constitution Hall. She sang on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial instead. Someday the Anti-Defamation League will be feeling a similar shame about their position on the Moslem community center. The irony is similar. The DAR was supposed to be all about freedom, and the ADL is supposed to be about religious tolerance.

Just a reminder: The Al Queda attacked us. Not the Moslem religion.

Republican Congress: If you care about us and healing, please take the time you’ve spent opposing this Moslem community center and use it support the health care bill for the 9/11 rescue workers.

In honor of my post today I give you bridges. (The Brooklyn Bridge is in the foreground, the Manhattan bridge is in the background.)

I’m Forgetting Something

What was it?? Ugh. Well, it’s not coming to me.

I was not invited to Chelsea Clinton’s wedding. Anyone else? Also, today is National Dance Day and I can’t find any events in the city. Not that I could go because I will be working at the CENSUS.

Here are Shaved Belly Finney and Buddy, lazing about. Look at that look Buddy gave me.

Finney Update

He’s doing really well. The hair on his belly is growing in much faster than Buddy’s did, which I guess is not surprising given that Buddy has cancer and is on chemotherapy. All the inflammation in his urinary tract is down except for the one spot where the thing was removed, and that’s to be expected. That area is going to take longer to heal. Last, I started him on glucosamine and fish oil for the arthritis on 7/20 and I can’t wait for a month to go by to see how he’s doing.

So Finney! How are you doing? Mavis wants to know. (He’s giving me his pathetic look here.)

“I smell like fish. How do you think I’m doing?” (He really does.)

And here he’s giving me his “I’m fine, why? Do you have food that needs to be consumed?” look.

Writing Break

I’m here because I’m tired and I’m afraid. I had what I thought was a great idea for the last third of this chapter, and I still think it’s a good idea, but now I’m doubting my ability to pull it off. It could be this beautiful, lyrical thing, or it could be stupid, sentimental and weird.

I want to go to the movies.

Anyway, I took this picture on the way to the subway. Or, I was following balloon man, hoping he’d lose a few balloons in my direction.
