Gross Picture Warning: LOOK AWAY now if you are squeamish!

Quick back story: I discovered a mass on Finney’s hindquarters on Friday. Everything indicated an abscess, and even the vet immediately thought abscess when she saw it. But when she went to drain it, it was a no-go on the abscess diagnosis.

It could still be an infection, a benign growth, or a tumor which turns out to be cancer. I’m trying to remain calm. Results from the biopsy won’t come back for 3 to 5 days. She put him on antibiotics right away though, in case it’s still an infection.

This morning Finney threw up and it looked like there was blood in there. The vet said see how the rest of the day goes, and how he eats (which is about the same as usual). If he seems worse bring him in at 9am tomorrow.

Here’s the thing. I’m supposed to start jury duty tomorrow morning. I looked, and they have no procedure for canceling last minute. There’s no way I’m going to jury duty if Finney is worse, but even if he’s not, I don’t know about leaving him alone all day every day, in case he gets worse when I’m not there. I don’t know what to do!

Here is the mass. Look away if you are squeamish.

  1. That’s terrible about jury duty. I feel for you. I’d be beside myself with jury duty anxiety. Maybe if you take him in you can get a note from the vet and later ask the court’s mercy. I do hope Finney is ok.

  2. Who knows if jury duty operates in NYC the same way it operated when I was living in Toronto back in the 80s… Everyone who was called up for jury duty when I was, was part of a juror “pool.” Whenever there was a trial starting somewhere in the courthouse, we all trooped down to the courtroom where jury selection began (I know THAT procedure is MUCH different in the US from the Canadian system). You might or might not get selected for a trial that starts Monday morning. Anyway, my point is, you never know what time a trial will begin & what time they will want to start selection. Maybe if you go down to the courthouse at the time you’ve been asked to report, you might be able to find someone who would take pity on you and excuse you for a couple of hours in the morning, enough time for you to get Finney to the vet. Wouldn’t hurt to bring your smart phone & show this blog post & the photo of Finney’s butt.
Best of luck to you & to Finney. I hope this mass turn out to be something that is easily remedied!

  3. I finally got my first jury duty notice in the fall of 2013. Nora’s description above is correct. There was a huge jury pool and they asked us one after the other if we had some (lame) excuse for not serving. They had the accused in the courtroom and we knew it would be for a longish murder trial starting right away.

I had just started the first year of my MA and didn’t know if I could afford to be away from classes as much as would have been required by a full murder trial. Also, my mother was dying (she died in October.) But in the end, I played my trump card by telling them I had been called to the Bar in 1986. They hate lawyers on juries. I was excused.

I am really sorry to hear about Finney. Pets are our lives and then they leave us, all too soon. I hope you get to spend some more time with him.

  4. Thank you Skylar, Nora and Julia. I found a number to call and was able to be excused easily.

I just learned Finney needs another test. I thought they were doing a biopsy, but apparently they didn’t and now they need to do a biopsy.
