Pigeons Fed

A blog about New York City, my books, and my cats. Mostly.
They’re such civilized eaters. I do miss having them right in front of me on the fire escape.

I’m now working every day except Sunday! It was fun, and not hard, and people were nice to me. Many were brusque, and ignored me, but I ignore people like me too, so I didn’t take that personally.
I was supposed to have a banner, but it was missing from my set-up, so I made a little sign, which looks pretty sad in this picture. It worked better in reality. And I just kept smiling and saying, “Hi! I’m here to answer your questions about the 2010 Census! Did you get your form,” etc. I actually helped a bunch of people fill theirs out, answered questions and felt generally useful.
I’ve been assigned to three locations. Today was Greenwich House on Barrow Street, next up is Our Lady of Pompeii on Carmine, and 149 Christopher … what’s that? Ah, another church, St. Veronica’s. They’ve got me bouncing around between these three for the next month!
Please note the forms on the desk. Those are the ones I have to fill out for every person helped. Most asked question: I couldn’t find a place to sign the form. Did I miss it, is there a place to sign the form? Answer: no.

Sorry, I love Joe Biden AND I talk that way myself. So I don’t have a problem with it. Give ’em hell, Joe. And thank you and everyone else who got us the new health care bill.
Where was I?
Filling out paperwork.
Because I’m a fed now and that’s what we do. It’s insane. I have to fill out a separate form for every person I help with the 2010 Census. I’m sure I could have designed a better form, one that could be used to cover everyone helped per shift.
I could have also designed a better payroll form, which I just learned are kicked back 15% of the time because someone filled them out wrong. I take that back. I’m looking at it and this one isn’t that bad really, the mistakes people are making are careless mistakes, it’s not a design issue. I guess the thing is, now that we know which sections people aren’t being careful about, maybe larger bold-faced type … and this is the most boring post ever, isn’t it? I’m done. Sorry.
Today will be my first and only day working for the Census, unless I get an enumerator job later. There was a mix-up about my schedule and so I was assigned one shift only. But I will be back with pictures!
Here’s Finney giving a good stretch. I love the splayed toes on that back paw. So cute. He’s saying, “Yup, we’ll be relaxing back here, looking cute for a living. Please don’t forget that the ‘bringing home the bacon’ line is meant to be taken literally. And bring home bacon, is what we’re saying. Thank you.”

Paul Krugman speaks for me. And I’m sorry anyone who disagrees with me. But I would not put anyone here in the same category as Sarah Palin, Newt Gingrich and others, so this editorial is not about you, okay? This is about them (I can’t believe Gingrich framing civil rights like it’s a bad thing) and John “There will be no cooperation for the rest of the year,” McCain’s total lack of grace.
Taken seconds ago on the roof. Love my pigeons. Sorry I was late guys.
