The Cover for Damnation Island, My Next Book

Okay, please overlook the fact that my name was misspelled! I’m sure it has been corrected. I love this cover. Those are the ruins of the Smallpox Hospital on the southern end of what is now called Roosevelt Island (I wrote about the 19th century, when it was called Blackwell’s Island).

  1. This cover is great – makes you want to pick it up and read it.

The spelling mistake is a pain but good editing is no longer a priority in publishing these days. It’s irritating.

  2. I love the cover! It’s a real beauty!! Did you take that photo?

My two cents for the great subtitle: BEING poor, sick, mad & criminal in 19th century New York. Or, TO BE poor, sick etc. Maybe it’s just me. But I’m missing an article or a verb in the sub. Don’t hate me.

I love the use of the word “poor” — it’s rare these days. It’s a real attention grabber. And the image is awesome.

  3. CR, thank you!

Rebecca, the mistake was actually on the part of the art department, and this was an unfinished version that was going around while they were deciding on the cover. So it really wasn’t anyone not doing a good job, it was a work in progress.

Vivian, the subtitle bothers me for the same reason. I passed on your suggestion to my editor, thank you!
