My greatest fear has happened: a mouse has died somewhere and is starting to smell up the
apartment. I’ve got a call into the landlord, but I’m probably on my own.
It smells the most in the cabinets underneath on the right. It really seems like the mouse must be inside the cabinet. If I smell underneath the cabinets there, or behind them, I barely smell it. The odor is concentrated inside, but I can’t find anything in there. I’m going to look again. Then I guess I’m going to have to pull this section of cabinet away from the wall and see what I see.
Given how tiny they are, I venture to guess it will not smell for long. Soon the little corpse will desiccate and then it should just fade away, dust to dust. I hope.
Unfortunately the smell might get a lot worse before it gets better. I don’t think it will be as bad as you may fear to just move the cabinet with dustpan and plastic bag handy. Good luck!
I moved the cabinet and there was nothing behind it. Maybe it’s in the floor?
Okay, I worked in an office once that had the same issue and the odor kept getting stronger. The landlord was called and two guys came in and found where the smell was the strongest above the baseboard. They cut a hole in the wall and found a rat that had come in between the walls and died. Smell was awful! Maybe its time for an exterminator.
I called the exterminator last month when the problem began, and they never called me back. But I put another call into them today.
