God, this episode of Last Week Tonight is so well done. If only everyone would watch it. He quoted from the Kerner Commission! I’ve been studying that report as part of my research (which is actually about fair housing and mortgage fraud, but when I wanted to see how the mortgage fraud began I was led to the riots of 1967 and 1968, the Kerner Commission, and the recommendations in their report).
The history he highlights and the line he draws from that history to now is so correct and so important.
Personally i don’t think we’re thinking big enough. Defund the military, too, which is responsible for the suffering of civilians worldwide. Police budgets are a drop in the bucket…imagine what we could do with Pentagon money.
I only hope Biden chooses Warren for VP. She could make a difference. We need great minds at this point because the problems we face are fucking astronomical. Secondly, I hope RBG can hang in there until January……. But then there were the long, slow Georgia election lines yesterday, so maybe our great experiment in democracy has already died. We should all call out for our mamas because it does all seem hopeless. Yet those people, sick and tired, waited in those lines for hours on end. So there’s that.
Sorry I’m so depressing this morning – great program and I’ve already sent it to my daughters.
Rebecca, I also hope Biden chooses Warren. Even more so after reading this link Citizen Reader sent me:

Excellent explanation of CLO’s and the current situation our financial institutions find themselves in. Go back to Bill Clinton and his misguided idea to toss out the Glass-Steagall Act that had protected our economy since 1932; we then get the Dodd-Frank bill after the 2008 crisis which Warren has said is not perfect but better than nothing. So now Dodd-Frank doesn’t give the electorate adequate protection, as banks have gotten around the rules.
It worries me that Biden, who is not coming forth as very quick on his feet, put his good friend Chris Dodd, on his VP search committee. Dodd would not be enthusiastic about a Warren VP I assume. But she understands wall street, could make a huge difference beefing up bank regulations and I think Biden wants someone he actually knows well. Unfortunately he has made several bad calls in his career, especially with the Anita Hill hearing. I hope he makes the right call now. If not Warren, then I would support Susan Rice, a foreign policy expert, which Biden has no talent for the big decisions in my opinion. Hopefully Obama will have his ear. Biden was a great VP tho.
