I Want a Real Vacation

I haven’t taken a vacation in DECADES. One where I really don’t work at all and just do fun stuff for a week at least.

Meanwhile, I need to find out what it was like to work in a coal mine in the early 1900’s. So, basically, I’m looking for a book titled: What is Was Like to Work in a Coal Mine in the Early 1900’s. I’m sure the cliff notes version has three words. It was hard.

I don’t have any new pictures, so here is one more of the sweetest dog in New York. You can see her face a little better in this one.

  1. My paternal grandfather worked in a coal mine for ten years, late 20s/30s. He and my grandmother even lived in the “coal mining town,” got food at the company store, etc. Yes, it was very difficult, from what my grandfather said – but also, more importantly, it was extremely dangerous.

He almost got killed once by falling debris, but just before that he heard a voice calling him outside. That saved his life, but there was no one calling him! I actually wrote an article about that for Fate magazine years ago.

At any rate, my grandparents didn’t have children till their 30s, saved what money they could during those mining years, then bought a farm and ran a cafe for their later years. Still, they lived through the depression – and from what they told me that was worse than the mining.

  2. Cara, I would love to see that article! Do you still have it. That’s interesting that the depression was worse than the mining.
